Tropical development is likely to occur for the first time during the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. A low pressure area, currently termed a Potential Tropical Cyclone will move towards Florida on Friday.

Tropical Storm Watches are in place for South Florida as heavy rain and gusty winds are possible. Any strengthening in the southeast Gulf of Mexico or southwest Atlantic Ocean will lead to a tropical storm and the first named storm, Alex, of the 2022 season.

The WPC surface forecast map shows the tropical system crossing Florida on Saturday. The map below is valid at 8pm Saturday.

Pockets of heavy rain may soak south Florida as the storm rolls across the state. The WPC rainfall forecast through Sunday shows totals that may add up to 3-5"+ of rain. Localized flooding is possible.

The forecast track of the storm should keep it well south/east of our coastline. For Coastal Georgia and the Lowcountry a nearly stationary front may lead to some isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday-Sunday. If you have outdoor plans this weekend, don't cancel them as there will be many dry hours, but have a plan 'B' ready to go in case rain finds your area.

If you are headed to the beach on Sunday or Monday...watch for large swells and a higher rip current risk due to the tropical system(likely Alex) passing by offshore. Obey any posted signs or updates from lifeguards or beach patrol. Enjoy your time at the beach, but play it safe!
