Ruthann Kellett, 76, of Pompton Plains, passed away on September 17, 2022. Ruthann was born in Paterson, New Jersey; raised in Pompton Lakes; and was a 33 year resident of Pompton Plains. For the last 6 years she wintered in Naples, Florida. Ruthann was a 1968 graduate of William Paterson College where she was one of only a handful of girls in the first class of Physical Education Majors. This was a five year program at the time. She excelled at sports at WPC and to this day a plaque in her name hangs on the college's wall of fame. She went on to teach Physical Education at Peqannock Township High School for 32 years. Her girls basketball teams amassed a record of 299 wins and 141 losses. In 1992 she became the first female coach of a boys high school basketball team in New Jersey. She was also the Athletic Director of Pequannock Township High School for a number of years. She finished her career in Pequannock at Stephen J. Gerace School. With her passing, Ruthann has left 32 years of students (high school and elementary, athletes, and players) with a loyal recognition of her high expectations for them, her devotion to physical education and health and its administration, basketball, field hockey, softball and of course, her beloved golf. Her excellence and achievements span many years. She liked to brag that at age 11 she was the Paterson All-School Checkers Champion. In her youth, Pompton Lakes did not have a swim team unlike the surrounding towns. With her adoring father in tow, she entered as an individual in numerous swim events against organized teams. Needless to say, she walked off with many medals. Her love of golf was legendary. She won numerous championships and shot five hole-in one(s). Ruthann is survived by her husband, David; her brother, Robert H. McCorry and his wife Nancy; her sister, Arlene Platt; and numerous adoring nieces and nephews, and friends of all ages. Memorial visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 pm on Friday, September 23 at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains. A memorial service will be held 9:30 am on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruthann's memory can be made to: 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 P.O.
