A Derbyshire pub has made several changes after receiving a score of one out of five in its last food hygiene inspection.

Officers from North East Derbyshire District Council visited The Plough Inn, in Matlock Road, Brackenfield, on September 22 and said it needed major improvement after finding a number of problems.

According to the Food Standards Agency website, the pub - which has a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor - required major improvement when it came to management of food safety and needed improvement on hygienic food handling and cleanliness and condition of the building and facilities.

Derbyshire Live have requested the council report through a Freedom of Information request.

A co-owner responded to the score on the FSA website, which contains ratings for every food-serving outlet in the country.

They said: "I have now registered as the Food Business Operator, having not previously known that this was a requirement.

"The damaged kitchen floor was one of many inherited structural defects when we took over this very old building. The damaged floor has now been repaired.

"The obstructed wash hand basin was not the only wash basin in the kitchen, another one exists that is more easily accessible.

"However, the basin that was obstructed has now been removed and is being reinstalled in the vegetable preparation area.

"The ice machine has since been renovated, however it was not the source of ice at the time of the inspection. We have been using bought-in ice for a while as the ice machine needed repairs.

"A soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser have been fitted next to the wash hand basin.

"All of the kitchen has been re-painted and we have fitted PVC wall cladding to appropriate areas.

"The reports left by our pest control contractor will now be kept at the premises, rather than being filed away at my co-director’s office.

"We are grateful to the EHP for leaving us a food safety management ledger.

"However, we did have a Hands On system in place previously, in that every item cooked, by the one person doing the cooking, was visually inspected prior to cooking."

The score will likely have come as a shock to many punters, with the pub receiving rave reviews on TripAdvisor.

One five-star rating said: "Taking sandwich, chips and salad to a whole new level.

"Crunchy brown bread was delicious, full of seeds and a nutty flavour.

"The cream cheese and smoked salmon was generous and tasty, the chips were homemade and really good and the salad dressed with a lovely balsamic glaze.

"Husband's pork sandwich, he also really enjoyed with an accompanying homemade apple sauce.

"Our dog thoroughly enjoyed his treats of meat offcuts with a bowl of fresh water. So thoughtful and much appreciated.

"Thank you, The Plough Inn - a super ‘passing through’ lunch, enjoyed in your lovely garden with views. Highly recommend."

A rating of one out of five means major improvement is needed, with a score of zero meaning urgent improvement is needed.

Inspections are carried out by local authorities according to criteria set by the Food Standards Agency, with authorities having the power to temporarily close a business if it poses a risk to public health.

After a business is inspected, the council has 14 days to inform operators of the scoring decision.

The business then has 21 days to appeal against that decision and only after this can we at Derbyshire Live submit a Freedom of Information request, which can take up to 20 working days to be provided.

Once we receive the information, we again contact the business in question for comment to see what action it has taken before publishing the findings of the report.
